Punit Malhotra worked as an assistant director for several Bollywood films before starting his own directorial journey.

He started off with Karan Johar’s Film “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham” in 2001. In 2002 he got an opportunity to direct Hansal Mehta’s “Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai?”. In 2003 he was seen working in Nikhil Advani’s film “Kal Ho Naa Ho”. After two years in 2005, Punit worked in Amol Palekar’s film “Paheli”. And after 3 years, in 2008 he worked in Tarun Mansukhani’s film “Dostana”. He took a break of 2 years and came up with his own film in 2010.

Punit debuted as a director, with his own written film, “I Hate Luv Story” which was produced under Karan Johar’s Dharma Production and Ronnie Screwvala’s UTV Motion Pictures. His film starred ‘Imran Khan’ and ‘Sonam Kapoor’. The movie was a hit and earned 66 crore rupees worldwide. The costumes were designed by his paternal uncle and India’s best designer “Manish Malhotra”.

Punit’s second movie was “Gori Tere Pyaar Mein” in 2013. It is a romantic comedy movie written and directed by Punit himself. It was produced under Karan Johar’s Dharma Production. The film starred ‘Imra Khan’ and ‘Kareena Kapoor’ as the main lead. Actors like ‘Shraddha Kapoor’ and ‘Anupam Kher’ were also a part of the movie.

In 2019 Punit directed “Student of the year 2”, the sequel to Karan Johar’s directed film ‘Student of the year’. It is a teen romantic comedy film produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Production. The film starred ‘Tiger Shroff’, ‘Tara Sutaria’, ‘Ananya Pandey’ and ‘Aditya Seal’. It was Ananya and Tara’s debut film.

In 2020 Punit directed two music videos “Unbelievable” and “Casanova” both featuring Tiger Shroff. It was his first time directing a music video.
