Stephanie Miller Career

Stand Up Comedy

Miller’s first employment after college was at the Laugh Factory, the famed Hollywood comedy club, where he worked for club owner Jamie Masada, answering phones, placing names on the marquee, cocktail waitressing, and other duties while simultaneously performing stand-up comedy. Miller returned to upstate New York a few years later and worked at Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club in Buffalo, where she lived in a $125-per-month apartment above a pizza business close to the club. She performed in various comedy clubs in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles while working on radio in the 1980s and 1990s.

On August 5, 1988, and March 3, 1989, she appeared on A&E’s An Evening at the Improv, which aired on the A&E TV Network. When the Chicago Improv club originally debuted, she was the first comedian to perform there. In addition, when residing in New York City in the early 1990s, she performed a one-woman Off-Broadway performance. When Miller returned to Los Angeles from New York City in 2003, she also performed at the Laugh Factory. Miller claims that every time she is about to speak in front of an audience, she has a conversation with her late father.

Radio Career

Miller had no intention of pursuing a career in radio. When she returned to Lockport from California after her father’s death in 1983, she started her radio career. Her first radio appearance was on Sandy Beach’s morning show on Hot 104 WNYS in Buffalo, New York, where she performed comedic pieces, including Katharine Hepburn’s imitation. She subsequently went on to work as an on-air personality at WLVL in Lockport, where she transitioned from evenings to afternoon drive to mornings in three months. Brother Wease (Alan Levin), the morning drive host at WCMF in Rochester, New York, was then sent a recording.

From early 1988 through October 1989, Miller worked as a morning co-host with John Howell at radio station WCKG in Chicago, and then for three years with Howard Hoffman at Hot 97 WQHT in New York City. Miller returned to Los Angeles in 1993 to work on a Warner Brothers sitcom that never came to fruition. Instead, she started her talk radio career in 1994, when she was hired by Los Angeles-based talk station KFI for her own weekend show, which swiftly evolved into a weekday radio show with outstanding ratings.

Miller would occasionally contact her mom (also called Stephanie) in upstate New York during the show, as she had done on previous stations in Rochester and New York City, and her mother would also co-host when she came to visit in person. Miller’s mother did the same on her KABC radio show later. Miller began to discuss politics on her KFI show. She claims that hearing Pat Buchanan’s anti-gay “culture wars” speech at the Republican National Convention in August 1992 was the catalyst for her becoming more outspoken about politics.

Television Talk Show

Miller was one of the very few women to host her own late-night talk program, The Stephanie Miller Show, which was broadcast by Buena Vista Television, in the autumn of 1995. The show had no orchestra, no podium, a studio audience with nightclub-style seating rather than theatre-style seating, video phone discussions with the public, and pre-taped sketches featuring Miller as real-life characters, which set it apart from other late-night television talk shows. Anne Beatts, a former Saturday Night Live writer, was the show’s Executive Producer and writer. Beats liked the immediacy of a daily chat program and enjoyed working on it with Miller.

The show, however, was terminated after only 13 weeks in December 1995. The last week the show aired on the air, Danny Bonaduce stood in for Miller. Miller reflected on the event for an article in The Buffalo News a few years later, saying, “In late-night, I believe 13 weeks is a fairly tough shot for any unknown. ‘I haven’t got a chance in hell, but I’ll give it a shot,’ I thought to myself during the 1964 campaign “.. Carlos Alazraqui, a comedian and voice actor who later worked with Miller on her KABC radio show and is now a regular guest on her current radio show, was a member of Miller’s sketch comedy group the Irregular Regulars.

Acting Career

Miller originally wanted to be an actor and had intended to appear in her own sitcom for many years. She also indicated an interest in acting in films. She had a few tiny acting roles early in her career, including a nun in the 1984 TV drama Shattered Vows and a brief appearance as a nurse on General Hospital. She had roles in which she virtually played herself after becoming well-known as a radio and television host, such as in the film View from the Top and an episode of the TV series Diagnosis: Murder. Miller’s most memorable performance was in the 1997 comedy flick Just Write.  She also considered making a television sitcom in the late 1990s with producer Barry Kemp, who cast her in an ABC pilot.

TV Hosting

Miller began co-hosting the CNBC television show Equal Time as the liberal counterweight to conservative Bay Buchanan in 1997 for almost a year, in addition to her radio show. She later admitted that she didn’t enjoy her time on Equal Time “all that much,” and that Buchanan would only speak to her when the camera was turned on. She departed Equal Time in 1998 to become the original host and writer for Show Me the Funny on the Fox Family channel, which she did until 1999.

Miller began anchoring the Oxygen Channel’s reboot of the game show I’ve Got a Secret in February 2000, shortly before her departure from KABC. Miller returned to the New York City region after her radio show on the ABC Radio Today network ended, and worked for the Oxygen Channel. She co-hosted Oxygen’s weekday 30-minute TV magazine show, Pure Oxygen, with May Lee from 2000 to 2002, in addition to anchoring the revival of I’ve Got a Secret, which aired for 120 episodes until 2001.
