Early life

Sherfane Rutherford started playing cricket at a young age in his hometown of Upper Demerara, Guyana. He played for the Demerara Cricket Club and also represented Guyana in various age-group tournaments.

Rutherford’s talent was recognized by the selectors, and he was included in the Guyana U-19 squad for the 2016 Regional U-19 competition. He had a good tournament, scoring 372 runs in six matches at an average of 53.14 and a strike rate of 89.17. He was the leading run-scorer of the tournament and helped Guyana win the title.

In the same year, Rutherford was also selected in the West Indies U-19 squad for the ICC U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. He played a crucial role in the team’s campaign, scoring 267 runs in six matches at an average of 44.50 and a strike rate of 97.45. He was the third-highest run-scorer of the tournament and helped West Indies reach the final, where they lost to India.

Domestic Cricket Career

Sherfane Rutherford has had a successful domestic career in cricket, particularly in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where he made his debut in 2018 for the Guyana Amazon Warriors. In his debut season, he scored 134 runs in six matches at an average of 33.5 and a strike rate of 130.

Rutherford continued his good form in the 2019 edition of the CPL, where he scored 163 runs in 11 matches at an average of 18.11 and a strike rate of 123.48. He played a crucial role in helping the Guyana Amazon Warriors reach the final of the tournament.

Apart from the CPL, Rutherford has also played for Guyana in the Regional Four-Day Competition and the Regional Super50 tournament. He made his first-class debut for Guyana in 2017-18 and scored a century in the final of the Regional Four-Day Competition against Barbados.

Rutherford has also played for the West Indies Under-19 team and was a member of the squad that won the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2016.

International Career

Sherfane Rutherford made his international debut for the West Indies cricket team in November 2018, in a T20I match against India. He was then selected to represent the West Indies in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he played in four matches, scoring 73 runs at an average of 24.33.

In August 2021, Rutherford was named in the West Indies squad for their T20I series against Pakistan. He played in all four matches of the series, scoring 97 runs at an average of 32.33, with a high score of 46 not out.

Rutherford has also represented the West Indies in One Day Internationals (ODIs), making his debut in August 2019 against India. However, he has played in only one ODI so far.

Sherfane Rutherford made his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2019, playing for the Delhi Capitals franchise. He was bought by the team for INR 2 crore ($280,000 USD) and played in seven matches that season.

Rutherford made an immediate impact in his first IPL match, scoring a quickfire unbeaten 45 runs off just 13 balls against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He hit two fours and four sixes in that innings and helped his team chase down a challenging total of 152 runs in just 18.5 overs.
