While working at the investment firm Bear Stearns, Sarma discovered her passion for cooking and decided to pursue a career in the same field. In 2001, she began her cooking journey with Matthew Kenney, a popular chef, and they opened a restaurant called “Commissary.”
However, within two years, the restaurant was closed, and then she joined Jeffrey Chodorow’s China Grill Management. Sarma, Matthew, and Jeffrey, together in 2004, created a vegan and raw food restaurant called “Pure Food and Wine” in New York.
In a short time, their restaurant received global recognition, and New York Magazine ranked it among the Top 100 Restaurants. Furthermore, Forbes magazine named the restaurant “All Star New York Eateries” five years in a row.
Following the success of “Pure Food and Wine”, they started a takeaway retail store, “One Lucky Duck Juice and Takeaway,” where they sold books, skincare, apparel, and home products for raw and organic living.
Sarma’s downfall started in 2015 when her employees walked out of the restaurants because they were not getting their salaries. The following year, both her business ventures were closed and she was charged with grand larceny, tax fraud, and violation of labor law.
In 2017, Sarma pleaded guilty to her crimes, and she was sentenced to four months in jail. Recently, Netflix released a documentary titled “Bad Vegan: Fame, Fraud, and Fugitives,” which was based on her life and crimes.
