Neeraj Chopra is an Indian track and field athlete, who throws javelin. He created history by winning a gold medal in javelin throws and became the first Indian to do so. He has given a gold medal to Indian almost 13 years later, the last time India won an individual gold medal in the 2008s Olympics. Neeraj is also known for winning a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games Jakarta and the Commonwealth Games Gold Coast.

Neeraj grew up in Panipat, Haryana, India along with his family and relatives. He went to Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College for graduation. Being a child with obesity, he was forced to join a gymnasium at Madlauda and went to Panipat Sports Authority of India center. In the sports complex, he liked throwing javelin and threw more than 40m without preparation. Neeraj decided to make a career in the same field and joined Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula.

Career

Neeraj began his sports career in 2012 after winning nationals in Lucknow by creating a record throw of 68.40m. In 2013, he participated in the World Youth Championship in Ukraine but unfortunately failed to win a medal. His first medal came in 2014 a silver at the Youth Olympics Qualification in Bangkok.

In 2016, Neeraj won a silver medal at the Asian Junior Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He won his first gold medal at the World Junior Championships by creating a junior world record of 86.48m. In the same year, he was inducted into the Indian Army as a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Rajputana Rifles with a rank of Naib Subedar.

In 2018, Neeraj won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and a gold medal at the Asian Games in the same year. Recently in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he created history by winning the first gold medal in javelin throw for India. Neeraj dedicated his win to sprinters Milkha Singh and P. T. Usha.
