Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian athlete, weightlifter, and media sensation. She is best known for winning a silver medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics for India in 49 kg women’s category. She is also famous as a winner of a gold medal in world championships of weightlifting in 2017 and a winner of the Padma Shri Award in 2018.

Mirabai was born and raised in Nongpok Kakching, Imphal East, Manipur, India along with her parents and siblings. She attended a local school for elementary education. Career

Mirabai amassed popularity as a weightlifter around the world in 2014 after winning a silver medal in Glasgow Commonwealth Games. In 2016, she participated in the Rio Olympics in 48 kg women’s category but unfortunately failed to win any medal. In the following year, she won a gold medal in the World Weightlifting Championships in 48 kg women’s category.

Mirabai won a gold medal for India in the 2018 Commonwealth Games by lifting 86 kg in Snatch and 110 kg in Clean and Jerk. She won a bronze medal in the 2019s Asian Weightlifting Championships. Recently, she won a silver medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics for India by lifting 202 kg in 49 kg women’s category and became the first Indian to win a medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020. Mirabai is the second weightlifter of India, who has won a medal in 49 kg women’s category after Karnam Malleswari. It is believed that she is going to win more medals for India in different championships.

In 2018, Mirabai won a Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award. Besides this, she won 1 crore from the government of Manipur and 50 lakhs from the government of India after winning a silver medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
