Guardia was crowned Miss Costa Rica in 1978 and went on to compete in the Miss Universe 1978 beauty pageant and the Miss World 1978 beauty pageant. The  Miss Universe competition was held in Acapulco, and she was approached by Televisa producer Sergio Bustamante with proposals to pursue a career there, but she returned to her nation. She accepted the offer a few months later and returned to Mexico.

In 1980, Guardia migrated to Mexico, which proved to be a key milestone in her entertainment career. In 1980, she starred alongside Manuel “El Loco” Valdés in her debut television show.
