Tacoma police officers say they encountered Ellis while he was walking around 11:30 p.m. on March 3. They say he was allegedly punching a car window in the area of 96th Street South and Ainsworth Avenue in Tacoma. According to officials, two Tacoma police officers in the area asked Ellis if he needed any help.

When the officer stepped out of the car to talk, Ellis allegedly assaulted the officer, Troyer said. Troyer said Ellis then picked up and slammed the officer and dropped him to the ground, prompting another officer to exit the police. Alice is physically restrained by the cruiser and to stop her.
Once Ellis was in custody, he complained of breathlessness, officials said. Authorities put Ellis on his side and called for medical assistance, Troyer said.
