She rose to fame after winning the Miss USA contest which led her to compete in that year’s Miss Universe pageant and secured her place among the top six.
She was -the second black woman to get crowned as “Miss USA” after Carole Gist. Kenya was born on 24 January 1971 in Detroit, Michigan, U.S to teenage parents and was raised by her aunt and grandmother after she was abandoned by her mother when she was just 3 years old. She also revealed that since birth Kenya was ignored by her mother and never named her. She also told that her mother always tried to pretend that she never had her as a child and did not exist for her.
In 1989, she graduated from Cass Technical High School in Michiganand while she was still in high school, Kenya was tortured by her older boyfriend and experienced domestic violence. She said she was tormented physically, mentally, and once nearly killed as she was stabbed with a fingernail file by him which ended up her to a hospital. Later, she majored in psychology and minored in communication from Wayne State University in Michigan.
