Jones started his early career in the field of football while attending South Cobb high school. Then he began playing football at NC State University. On November 29, 2017, Jones commenced his senior football journey by abiding in the Senior Bowl league.

He marked his senior debut on January 27, 2018, in the Reese’s Senior Bowl championship along with Denver Broncos where he got trained by Vance Joseph. Later he was also trained by some popular coaches including Houston Texans’ head coach Bill O’Brien.

Besides this, he was eventually signed by the NFL Scouting Combine and completed his early combine and positional drills. The same year he also participated in the NC State’s pro day, and demonstrated his positional drills and the short shuttle.

At the end of the season he was ranked the best 14 defensive tackler by the NFL committee. Apart from this, he was also ranked the 20th-best defensive tackle by DraftScout.com.
