She started her protest by sitting every day outside the Riksdag and she continued it for three weeks while holding the banner ‘‘School Strike for the Climate’’ (Skolstrejk för klimatet).  At the same time, she spread her messages through Instagram and Twitter which went extremely viral and gained international coverage. Her proclamation inspired students over the globe and by the end of 2018, she had successfully motivated over 20,000 students to hold strikes in more than 200 cities.

Since August 2019, she traveled across Europe, gave speeches, mobilized her followers and encouraged them to action, and gradually became an influencer. In October 2018, she was nominated for the Children’s Climate Prize.

But she contradicted to take the honor by saying that finalists had to fly to Stockholm to attend the ceremony which went against her values of leaving a low carbon footprint. In February 2020, many academic students signed an open letter supporting Greta and her acting. Later, she has released a song called ”The 1975” through which she tried to remember the world about the 1975 climate summit.

In 2018, Greta gave her speech in the plenary session of the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24) which went viral and increased her popularity. Since then, Greta has given speeches about climate change at different events such as European Parliament, TEDxSTockholm, Davos, European Economic and Social Committee, Austrian World Summit R20, and Brandenburg Gate.

She wrote that New Zealand’s Labour Government had only committed to reducing less than one percent of New Zealand’s carbon emissions by 2025. She was addressed the world and urged the world to change the food production system and to protect animals and their habitats.

On 28 September 2021, Greta was given her speech at the Youth4Climates Summit in Milan and criticized Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi, British prime minister Boris Johnson, U.S. president Joe Biden, and other world leaders. She said that “They invite cherry-picked young people to meetings like this to pretend they are listening to us.
