Education

Frank Vogel was born in Wildwood, New Jersey, on June 21, 1973. Vogel went to Wildwood High School and got his diploma in 1991. Vogel played Division III basketball for Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He was a starter on the team.

Coaching Career

Boston Celtics (2001–2004)

Vogel got his start as a coach when he worked as an assistant for the Boston Celtics under Jim O’Brien. He played this part for three years. He stayed in that job for five years, until the 2001–02 season, when he was made an assistant coach.

Philadelphia 76ers (2004–2005)

After coaching with Boston, Vogel went on to become an assistant for the Philadelphia 76ers. Vogel left the 76ers to become an advance scout for the Los Angeles Lakers from 2005 to 2006 and the Washington Wizards from 2006 to 2007.

Indiana Pacers (2007–2016)

In 2007, Vogel followed his old Celtics coach Jim O’Brien to Indiana as an assistant with the Pacers.

Vogel took over as interim coach when O’Brien was let go as head coach on January 30th, 2011. Vogel, in his role as interim coach, guided the Pacers to their first playoff appearance since 2006. On July 6, 2011, Vogel was formally introduced as the new head coach of the Indiana Pacers.

The Pacers won the Central Division for the first time since 2004 on April 7, 2013. With a final record of 49–32 in 2012–13, they earned the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat after sweeping the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks in as many games.

The Heat won game 1 103-102 in overtime as LeBron James scored a game-winning layup after driving past Paul George with 2.2 seconds remaining. The NBA announced Vogel as the coach of the Eastern Conference for the 2014 All-Star Game on January 14.

With his leadership, the club was off to the greatest start in its history, finishing with a 56-26 record and first place in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers were unable to repeat last year’s Conference Finals victory against the Miami Heat.

Larry Bird, president of the Indiana Pacers, said on May 5, 2016, after a defeat to the Toronto Raptors, that Vogel will not be re-signed. Bird cited a need for “a new voice” to lead the team.

Orlando Magic (2016–2018)

Vogel became the Orlando Magic’s head coach on May 20, 2016. In his first year, he led a young, growing squad and saw the general manager who recruited him, Rob Hennigan, replaced by John Hammond. Both years he failed to make the playoffs, with a 54-110 record. After the 2017-18 season, the Magic decided to part ways with Vogel on April 12, 2018.

Los Angeles Lakers (2019–2022)

Vogel became the Los Angeles Lakers next head coach on May 13, 2019. The Lakers improved to a top defensive squad in the NBA in his first season with the franchise in 2019–20. They finished with a 52-19 record, the best in the Western Conference and third-best in the NBA, thanks to his leadership. Since the Lakers have the best record in the West, Vogel will be the head coach of the 2020 NBA All-Star Game.
