Cynthia was born on 19 February 1967 in Decatur, Alabama, United States, and was raised in Tuscumbia by her parents. Later she moved to New York City at the age of 18 to pursue her modeling career. She signed a five-year contract with an international modeling agency, Wilhelmina Models in New York and worked for various magazines and advertising projects.
She was highly inspired by her grandmother, Mae Frankie Ford who used to work for a sewing company, sold hamburgers and hotdogs, and cleaned houses. Cynthia joined the University of Alabama in Huntsville and took part in a local beauty pageants show. She also went to Deshler High School for her secondary education in Tuscumbia, where she became the first African American to be titled as “homecoming queen”.
After winning the title she participated in the “homecoming beauty pageant”. Though she did not win the title, she was approached by Wilhelmina Models Talent scout and was offered a modeling contract for five years due to which she moved to New York with the money she had raised while working part-time at a mall.
