In 2014 while studying at American Heritage School Brian began his football career on the high school team. He rated 135 tackles alongside 28 sacks and helped his high school team in winning a state title. Then in 2016, he committed to joining Florida State University to play college football. 

As a fresher at Florida state university, Burns played altogether 13 games where he led a score line of 8.5 sacks as compared to others freshers. In 2017, Brian experienced 13 games along with 48 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Similarly, at the end of the season, Brian decided to enroll himself in the 2019 NFL draft. Later he was signed by the Carolina Panthers.

Burns was chosen as the NFC defensive player of the week for his exceptional performance against Detroit Lions.
